Senior Structural Engineer.

We are therefore expanding our Toronto studio.

The position.

We are currently looking for a highly motivated Senior Engineer, responsible for specialist structural engineering design projects from inception to practical completion across all sectors (including workplace, residential, life science, education, retail, hotels, hospitality, sports and leisure).

At AKT II you will gain the opportunity to work on some of the most interesting and complex buildings around the world with current complete projects in over 50 countries.

The role requires attendance at project meetings, liaising with other disciplines and producing a detailed design and specification to meet with design and construction programmes, and ensuring the co-ordination of design and detailing work appropriate to the project. It also requires contribution to internal management of projects and associated resourcing appropriate to experience and capability.

The role and responsibilities.

Reporting to an Associate / Associate Director, as a Senior Engineer your responsibilities shall include, but shall not be limited, to the following:

  • Carrying out structural surveys of building/desk studies, and providing initial advice on any issues that may arise
  • Preparing conceptual and outline designs for structural schemes with support of the wider team
  • Preparing detailed design calculations to the National Building Code of Canada and relevant design guidance notes using relevant 3D software packages
  • Interpreting the client brief and assist in preparing designs at all stages from scheme through to detail
  • Acting independently to investigate solutions, you will explore options, work closely with partners and peers alike in order to develop and communicate design solutions
  • Preparing detailed design drawings and specifications for tender purposes
  • Responding to client requests for information
  • Attending design team meetings with clients and other design collaborators, and communicate design ideas through sketches, models and presentations
  • Assisting in the production of construction information for issue to contractors
  • Visiting sites during the construction phase to monitor progress and provide advice to contractors
  • Coordinating design information with engineers of other disciplines
  • With the support of the team leader, providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior members of the team
  • Where appropriate, facilitating and organising meetings and CPD training events to contribute to your own development and the development of others
  • Supporting and participating in AKT II’s technical agenda.
  • Day-to-day support to colleagues from other disciplines within the office
  • Attending team meetings with both internal and external disciplines
Required skills.
  • Sound knowledge of structural design in concrete, steel and timber structures, as well as experience in other structural materials
  • Experience of working with National Building Code of Canada and other local design guidance
  • Knowledge and interest in sustainable design and embodied carbon evaluation
  • A strong analytical knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, combined with practical understanding of buildings and construction
  • The ability to design and deliver structural solutions on major and/or complex projects
  • Aptitude to work on your own initiative and be proactive
  • A desire to work constructively in a team, finding holistic building design solutions
  • A good understanding of multidisciplinary requirements into coordinated solutions
  • Inquisitive, creative, solution-orientated designer. You will be a collaborative, persuasive and engaging individual who gives their all to ensure the client is happy and that the solution is high-quality and practical
  • Excellent planning, organisational and time management skills, with the ability to balance tasks and prioritise to meet strict deadlines
  • Sound communication and interpersonal skills
  • Computer literate with knowledge of design and analysis programmes
  • Understanding of the health & safety regulations and designer’s responsibilities
Qualifications and experience.
  • A good degree in Engineering
  • Professional Engineer Ontario (P.Eng)
  • The ideal applicant will be able to demonstrate their experience, competency and flexibility to rise to challenging situations and take on responsibility appropriate to their capability.
  • It is expected that the successful candidate will have at least 5 years experience in the area of Structural Engineering.
