In warmer climates, building façades have a specific range of parameters within which to work, rendering the traditional Western usage of glazing in commercial structures inappropriate. In this eponymous research project we worked with students of Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, where traditional vernacular building materials have included leather and woven material, to generate options for the future of structural design.
In a city finding its place on the global economic stage and famous for its huge recycling centre, we sought to develop envelopes that were efficient, well able to control the internal environment, and in keeping with their historical surroundings.
