This site in Marylebone was previously owned by the London Electricity Board and contains a massive basement with a brick-vaulted ceiling dating from about 1900. Understanding this structure was an essential part of setting the parameters for the design of a new residential complex above it.
It has the advantage of providing a ready-made underground car park, allowing architects Rolfe Judd to design a scheme with housing units arranged in various blocks around the perimeter of a car-free central courtyard. The construction of these new elements used traditional materials and techniques, and their precise position and form was dictated by where our analysis showed the subterranean structure can take additional load.
