Working with Richard Rogers Partnership, we designed a system of reusable canopies, nine metres square and supported on a single central column.
To achieve visual elegance and for ease of erection, dismantling and storage, the components and fittings are minimal, as well as accurately fabricated, well finished and carefully detailed. The central column cantilevers from a point foundation and because the fabric roof falls towards the centre, doubles as rainwater downpipe; it also contains provision for electrical services. Each is freestanding though they can be joined together to give temporary covering to a large area with a simple cleat fitting along each of the four edges – there are no perimeter ties. The system was first used as the entrance canopy to the Millennium Dome.
